Depth of Technical Knowledge

This is taken from years of working with great mentors within the sport (Fiona Lothian, Daren Smith and Chris Volley). The opportunity to attend Triathlon Scotland and also GB camps has greatly enhanced my technical knowledge over the years.

Approachable

I never shy away from a good chat (especially if it is over a coffee) and I am happy to alter things when they are not working and charge ahead when they are!

My Background

My sports background was originally in hockey where I played at international level before turning to Triathlon. I have competed at everything from Sprint to Ironman in my Triathlon career with my best result being second Female Vet at Aberfeldy Middle Distance Championship in 2005

Work with all levels of participants

I am very comfortable working with children, the beginner adults and up to top age-groupers and Commonwealth athletes. My experience in Triathlon has allowed me to work with all levels and I always find satisfaction in working with each different group.

Commitment

I have been the longest serving coach for Triathlon Scotland
(14 years in total) and I am still committed to the coach-education side of the sport with TS.

Strength and conditioning skills

My job as a College Lecturer has me working in the gym delivering a variety of S&C classes and qualifications to students.
This is relevant and very transferable to triathlon coaching - from full S&C programmes to specific rehabilitation programmes for injured athletes, strength and condition are cornerstones of performance improvement.

“To create coaching opportunities for everyone in the sport - from beginners to elite athletes and age- groupers - to compete and enhance their performances, achieve their personal goals and be the best they can be.”

What are the things that make me a good coach?

I believe these run hand-in-hand and that I have the ability to balance the support of athletes with the challenge of Triathlon competition. Knowing when to push and when to back off with each individual athlete is a lesson I have learned well. At my day job as a College Lecturer, I regularly work with Special Needs groups. If you do not have the skills of patience and motivation then these classes wouldn’t be as successful as they are.

After 30 years of coaching swimming and 16 years of coaching Triathlon…

  • Coach with Triathlon Scotland’s Foundation Squad for the last 14 years
  • Triathlon Scotland’s IRC squad Coach
  • Coach with Edinburgh Road Club
  • Head Coach at Edinburgh University for the last 3 years
  • Worked with performance coaches Fiona Lothian, Daren Smith and Chris Volley on the Triathlon Scotland’s training programmes.
  • Triathlon Scotland Tutor/ Assessor. Tutoring on levels 1, 2 and 3
  • Coached at various GB triathlon Training camps both in the UK and Abroad
  • Worked with Scottish Cycling on various women’s cycling programmes in the including the Scott-Contesa group an introduction to Velodrome cycling.

I mentor Edinburgh University students who are starting out in the coaching pathway. I help them prepare and organise individual lesson plans, programmes of various lengths and give them advice with their delivery skills.
I also escort athletes to races throughout the UK and Europe. This is when the skills of the mentor come into play. As a mentor, you need to know what to say and when to say it to get the best out of each particular athlete. According to the athletes involved, this has been a skill I have excelled at in my career.
